Associate Professor

Biodata

I am currently serving as Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Geoinformatics at the University of Kashmir. My research focuses on the cryosphere and alpine ecosystem dynamics, with particular emphasis on glacier-climate interactions, glacier-related hazards, alpine vegetation dynamics, and lake and wetland ecosystems across the Jammu and Kashmir region.

I have been actively involved in several major national initiatives, including cryospheric research programmes supported by the Department of Science and Technology, as well as national biodiversity and wetland mapping projects sponsored by the Indian Space Research Organization. These contributions have played an important role in generating strategic scientific knowledge for national-level policy formulation. I am also the first recipient from Jammu and Kashmir to receive the prestigious Indian National Science Academy recognition in the field of Earth and Environmental Sciences.

I am currently supervising six doctoral scholars working on diverse aspects of the cryosphere and environmental change. I have published 108 research papers in leading international journals, with a total of 5341 citations, an h-index of 38, and an i-10 index of 76. My work has appeared in several high-impact journals, including Science, Science Bulletin, Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society, Journal of Glaciology, Journal of Geophysical Research, and Geophysical Research Letters, among others.

I have successfully secured research funding of approximately 6 crore rupees and am currently leading multiple externally funded projects as Principal Investigator. These include a Ministry of Earth Sciences project on quantifying Glacial Lake Outburst Flood risk in the Indian Himalayan Region, an ANRF funded project on understanding permafrost dynamics in Jammu and Kashmir, an Indo European collaborative project supported by the Ministry of Earth Sciences on understanding the water cycle in a glaciated watershed in Ladakh using remote sensing, field observations, and numerical modelling, and a project funded by the Jammu and Kashmir Science Technology and Innovation Council focusing on the impact of light absorbing impurities on snow and glaciers.

I maintain strong international collaborations with leading institutions such as the Finnish Meteorological Institute, University of Zurich, University of Geneva, University of Aberystwyth, Monash University, and University of Calgary. At the national level, I collaborate with premier institutes including IISER Pune, IIT Madras, IIT Bombay, IIT Roorkee, and IIT Ropar. My work continues to bridge fundamental research with applied science, contributing to climate resilience, hazard mitigation, and sustainable management of mountain ecosystems.
